White Dod

White Dod sits 675 metres above the moorland between Sanquhar and the wider Dumfries & Galloway hills, and it's the sort of peak that sneaks up on you. The walk itself is straightforward enough - boggy in places, proper muddy after rain - but the views across the Southern Uplands make the squelch worthwhile. You're looking at rolling moorland stretching towards Merrick on a clear day, with the Nithsdale valley dropping away to your east.

It's not a dramatic summit. There's no rocky pinnacle or cairn to mark the top, just open moorland and the Ordnance Survey pillar if you're bothered with map work. That said, it rewards walkers who've made the effort to get out here. The moorland itself is bleaker than the tourist hotspots further south - fewer people, fewer footpath babble, which some will find refreshing and others a bit austere.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the road. The going is steady rather than technical, making it accessible to fell walkers with basic fitness. Families with older children who don't mind getting muddy will manage fine. Winter can be boggy and occasionally moorland weather turns quickly, so check the forecast and bring proper kit.

If you're staying at Sunnyside Lodges just five miles away, White Dod makes a decent half-day outing before heading elsewhere in the park. It's worth combining with Lowther Hill or exploring Sanquhar itself, rather than treating it as a standalone visit. Not essential, but rewarding for those prepared to venture off the main paths.
