Duntercleuch Rig

The walk up Duntercleuch Rig is genuinely worth the leg work if you're in the Sanquhar area, though I'd be honest - it's not a dramatic summit. What you get instead is a proper hill walk without the theatre, and that's rather the appeal.

You're looking at moorland terrain mostly, the sort of ground that becomes properly boggy if you've had rain, so time your visit carefully. The views from the top sweep across the Lowlands in a way that rewards the effort, particularly on a clear day when you can make out the lie of the land for miles. It took me about two hours there and back at a reasonable pace, and I'd say allow longer if you're not a regular walker.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might struggle with the exposed ground and exposed weather. If you're based at Sunnyside Lodges just up the road, this becomes a cracking afternoon option - close enough not to eat your whole day, far enough to feel like proper exercise.

There's no visitor infrastructure here, which matters. Bring water, wear proper boots, and check the weather before you head out. The moorland can turn murky fast. It's the sort of walk that doesn't need to be Instagram-friendly to be worthwhile. Straightforward, uncrowded, and genuinely nice if you're after a decent Lowlands hill without faffing about with booking anything in advance.
