White Ball Hill

The summit sits at 1,038 feet, which doesn't sound like much until you're actually climbing it from Taunton's direction. White Ball Hill cuts a distinctive silhouette across the Quantock range, and the walk up rewards you with proper views across Somerset's rolling countryside. Clear days see you looking right across to Exmoor. The path itself is straightforward rather than technical - a solid two-hour round trip from the car park - making it accessible for most walkers without needing special kit.

The name comes from the distinctive white stone cairn marking the summit, which you can't miss once you're up there. It's genuinely a lovely vantage point, though I'll be honest, the walk up feels a touch relentless in places, particularly the final push. Worth it though. You get that real sense of elevation and isolation despite being only four or five miles from Taunton.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger ones might struggle with the sustained gradient, and there's nothing at the top to keep them entertained beyond the views. Walkers will get genuine value - the landscape changes noticeably as you climb, and the panorama justifies the effort.

If you're based at Waterrow Touring Park, it's a straightforward drive - under thirty minutes - and pairs well with other Quantock walks. The peak draws far fewer crowds than Glastonbury Tor, which is rather the point. Bring water, check the weather forecast beforehand, and go mid-week if possible.
