Cudmore Farm Roman Fort

The remains of a Roman fort sit quietly on farmland near Taunton, unremarkable at first glance but genuinely interesting if you know what you're looking at. Cudmore Farm is what archaeologists call a 'marching camp' - a temporary fortification built by Roman legions on the move, not a permanent garrison. What survives now are earthwork banks and ditches that outline where the fort once stood, giving you a real sense of Roman military engineering and the sheer scale of their operations across Britain.

This is absolutely one for the history-minded, particularly those with a background in archaeology or Roman Britain. Kids might struggle to see past the bumps in the ground unless you spend time explaining what the ramparts meant and how soldiers used them. The walk around the site takes thirty minutes or so, depending on how long you linger and whether you're photographing the earthworks from different angles.

There's no visitor centre or facilities here - it's genuinely bare bones, free to access, and you just turn up. That's either brilliant or frustrating depending on your style. The nearest proper infrastructure is Taunton, a few miles off. If you're staying at Waterrow Touring Park, you're only twenty minutes away, making this a decent half-morning diversion before heading elsewhere. Nirvana Glamping is a touch further but still reasonable for a quick history stop. Best visited when the grass is short, probably late spring through early autumn, so you can actually trace the fort's outline properly.
