Whistlefish Barbican

The Barbican in Plymouth is where the city's soul actually lives, and Whistlefish is right at the heart of it. This isn't some sterile heritage site - it's a working fish restaurant built into a Tudor building that still feels lived-in, with creaking floors and low beamed ceilings that'll have tall visitors ducking constantly.

You're eating proper seafood in a space that's genuinely old, looking out towards the Hoe where Drake supposedly played bowls before facing the Spanish Armada. The Barbican itself - those medieval streets radiating out from the harbour - rewards a proper wander. Cobbles, half-timbered buildings, the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrims supposedly left for America. It's tourist-heavy on weekends, but weekday lunchtimes are brilliant.

Whistlefish does lunch and dinner, and the fish is fresh - they're not messing about. Prices aren't cheap, but you're in Plymouth's most atmospheric corner. Families with older kids will enjoy it; toddlers might struggle with the tight spaces. Allow a couple of hours if you're eating and exploring the surrounding streets.

It works well as a base for exploring the South Hams - Dartmoor Domes is just 6 miles away if you're after a proper park stay. Combine it with the Hoe itself, the Aquarium, or just endless harbour-gazing. On a clear day you can see across to Cornwall from the Barbican's edges. It's Devon tourism done right - atmospheric, real, and not trying too hard.
