Wheathampstead Place

The earthwork remains at Wheathampstead are genuinely impressive if you know what you're looking at. Iron Age ramparts and ditches cut deep into the Hertfordshire countryside, evidence of a proper settlement from around 70 BC - one of the most significant pre-Roman sites in the south. You're essentially walking through the bones of an ancient fortress, with the defensive banks still obvious after two millennia.

It's a working landscape rather than a visitor attraction with facilities. There's no entrance fee, no cafe, no interpretation boards spelling everything out for you. What you get is the freedom to wander the fields east of St Albans and puzzle out the archaeology yourself, which some will find brilliant and others slightly underwhelming. Kids might manage twenty minutes here if they're keen on Iron Age stuff; walkers will spend a good hour picking over the terrain and imagining what life looked like when these defences actually mattered.

The site works best as part of a longer ramble through the area rather than a destination in itself. It's convenient for caravan holidays at Commons Wood or Cherry Green Trees, both within five miles - close enough for a morning excursion before heading somewhere with more obvious attractions. If you're already based near St Albans and fancy something low-key and genuinely ancient, it's worth the detour. Just bring good boots and lower your expectations about signage and creature comforts.
