Wheal Maria

The industrial archaeology scattered around Wheal Maria tells the story of Cornwall's mining heritage without requiring you to descend into dark tunnels. What remains are the brick and stone ruins of a tin mine that once drove the local economy - engine houses, chimneys, and the ghostly framework of processing buildings emerging from moorland scrub. You can walk the site freely, picking your way through the overgrown remains and getting a genuine sense of what extraction looked like in the nineteenth century. It's bleak and beautiful in equal measure, especially when light hits the old stonework at the right angle.

Families with older kids who can manage uneven ground will find it engaging enough for an hour or so, though younger children might run out of steam quickly - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just you and the landscape. Early morning visits tend to be better - fewer people, softer light, and the whole site feels more atmospheric. Go on a clear day if you can; wet moorland here is genuinely grey.
