Wheal Josiah (ruin)

All that remains of Wheal Josiah is a handful of weathered stone structures scattered across Devon moorland near Tavistock - the ghost of a tin mine that once employed dozens. The engine house walls still stand, though the roof's long gone, and you can make out where the machinery would have thundered away during the 19th century. It's genuinely atmospheric if you like industrial archaeology, but be honest with yourself: there aren't many intact buildings here, and what's left requires a bit of imagination to picture in its heyday.

Historians and walkers will get the most from a visit. The ruins sit in open countryside, so the trek itself matters as much as the destination - you're looking at a proper moorland walk to reach it, which beats standing in a car park. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes; there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no facilities. Just old stones and views across the moor.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no official information readily available. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested in the site itself, longer if you're making it part of a wider walk. Spring and early autumn are best - the moorland's less bog-ridden and the light's better for photography.

It works well as a detour if you're staying at Woodovis Holiday Park or Sunnyside Eco Glamping, both within easy reach of Tavistock. Pair it with other local industrial heritage sites for a proper mining history day. Worth the walk, but only if you're the type who finds crumbling engine houses rather romantic.
