The ruins of Wheal Frementor sit quietly on the moorland above Tavistock, a proper window into Cornwall's tin mining past. What you're looking at are the skeletal remains of engine houses and mine workings from the 19th century - stone walls, crumbling chimneys, the ghost of an industrial operation that once fed Britain's appetite for tin. There's something about standing among these ruins that makes the scale of the work real in a way no museum can quite manage.

It's a straightforward walk to reach it, and honest - you don't need more than thirty minutes to have a look around and take it in. Walkers will find it worthwhile as a waypoint on a longer moorland ramble, especially if you're already exploring the area around Tavistock. History types will appreciate the tangible connection to Cornwall's mining heritage, though don't expect interpretation boards or guided tours - this is ruins in their raw state, which some will find atmospheric and others might find a bit underwhelming.

The moorland itself is the real draw: windswept, open, genuinely beautiful on a clear day. Come when the weather's decent, because wet moors are miserable, and bring a camera if you fancy it.
