You're looking at a genuine working wetland reserve in Aberdeenshire - the kind of place that reveals itself slowly rather than all at once, which is either brilliant or a bit dull depending on what you're after.

It's a proper spot for anyone serious about birdwatching. Bring binoculars and a field guide, and you'll clock cormorants, herons, and all manner of waders depending on the season. The viewing platform gives you decent sightlines across the water without disturbing anything. Families with young kids sometimes find it rewarding - there's something mesmerising about watching dragonflies and spotting twitching reeds - though patience is required. A child who needs constant stimulation will get bored within twenty minutes.

The walk itself is dead flat and doesn't take long, maybe forty minutes if you linger at the viewpoints. It's free to access, which is a nice surprise. Late morning works best for light, and May through September is peak for both birds and insects.
