Wether Hill (Wainwright)

The walk up Wether Hill doesn't mess about. Starting from the car park near Penrith, you're climbing proper Lake District fells within minutes - nothing fancy, just honest moorland that opens out properly once you gain height. It's a Wainwright, which means Alfie bagged it and wrote it down, and hikers have been trudging up ever since.

The summit itself sits at 1,220 metres, rewarding you with views across to Helvellyn and down towards Ullswater. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. The walk takes roughly two to three hours round trip depending on your pace, and the terrain is straightforward fell - no scrambling, no drama, just solid moorland walking.

This one suits fell-baggers working through their Wainwrights, and anyone after a decent half-day hill walk without the complications of the higher peaks. The views aren't as dramatic as some, but that's partly why the paths stay quiet. You won't battle crowds here.

Bring proper walking boots - the ground gets boggy in places, particularly after rain. Free to climb, naturally, and best tackled in decent weather when visibility actually means something. Spring through autumn is ideal.
