Wether Fell

The walk up Wether Fell from Hawes takes you through proper Yorkshire moorland, gaining height steadily without becoming brutal. You're looking at roughly two hours up and back, which makes it ideal if you want views without committing to a full day's hiking. The summit itself sits at 563 metres - high enough to feel like an achievement, low enough that it's genuinely accessible for families with older kids.

What you get at the top is a genuine sense of being somewhere. On clear days the Pennines roll out in all directions, and you can pick out Pen-y-ghent and Whernside to the south. The fell has a spare, windswept quality that feels earned rather than manufactured. It's a walker's hill, not a tourist attraction - there's no café, no tarmac path, just you and the moorland.

The nearest approach is from Hawes itself, which sits right at the base of the walk. If you're camping at Stablefell Holidays or one of the motorhome clubs nearby, you're genuinely on the doorstep. This works brilliantly for a mixed holiday where some days you want proper walking and other days you potter around the market town itself.

Best time is late spring through early autumn when the weather's more cooperative and the paths aren't waterlogged. Allow an extra 45 minutes if the ground's boggy - and it often is. Boots aren't optional. It's free, obviously, and worth the effort if you like moorland and don't need hand-holding.
