Westley Heights Country Park

The paths through Westley Heights aren't what you'd call dramatic - there's no sudden drop or sweeping vista - but the reserve rewards anyone after a proper walk through proper Essex countryside. It's a nature reserve just east of Billericay, and what makes it worth the trip is how accessible the walking is while still feeling genuinely rural. The trails wind through mixed woodland and open grassland, the kind of landscape you'd have expected across this corner of Essex fifty years ago before the suburbs closed in. You'll spot butterflies in summer, various bird species depending on the season, and wildflowers that justify returning at different times of year. It's not a scramble - families with kids can manage most of it without complaint, though the light can get tricky under the tree canopy in winter. Allow a couple of hours for a decent loop, longer if you're actually stopping to watch things. Best visited late spring through early autumn when there's something actually happening in the undergrowth. There's a reason the local campsites - Barleylands just 3.2 miles south and Thamesview a bit further out at 5.8 miles - recommend it to their guests. If you're basing yourself at either site for a longer Essex break, Westley Heights works as a morning escape before heading to busier attractions.
