Hall Wood

Walk into Hall Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old Essex woodland - the kind with towering oaks and a floor so thick with leaf litter it muffles your footsteps. This isn't some manicured country estate; it's a genuine forest that locals have tramped through for generations, just outside Billericay.

There are decent walking trails threading through here, nothing too taxing, though the paths can get boggy after rain so decent boots are wise. The woodland floor changes with the seasons - spring brings carpets of bluebells and wild garlic, autumn turns the whole place into a cathedral of russet and gold. It's the kind of place where you might spot muntjac deer if you're lucky and move quietly.

Families with younger kids will get a couple of hours out of it before the novelty of "just trees" wears thin, but proper walkers will appreciate it as a serious bit of forest. There's a real sense of being away from the M25 sprawl, even though you're nowhere near the wilderness.

The nearest campsites - Barleylands is closest at 3.4 miles, with Thamesview and Pightle Farm both around 5.7 miles away - make this a feasible half-day outing from a local holiday base. Don't expect facilities at the wood itself; it's old-school access land. Worth a visit if you're already in the area, though it's not the sort of place that justifies a special trip on its own.
