Westlands Park

The walk through Westlands Park feels properly wild for somewhere just outside Colchester. You've got meadows that actually look like meadows - long grass, wildflowers doing their thing - rather than the manicured stuff you find at most Essex nature reserves. There's a stream running through it as well, which means you'll spot water birds if you're patient enough to stop and look.

It's the sort of place where walkers come to clear their heads rather than tick off a destination. An hour is enough to get the full picture, though you could easily spend longer if you sit down for a bit. The paths are decent underfoot most of the time, though winter will test your boots. Families with young kids might find it a touch quiet - there's not much in the way of facilities or play areas - but teenagers who aren't glued to their phones will enjoy spotting wildlife.

The reserve sits well in a broader park holiday around Colchester. Swallows Field Glamping Pods, just up the road, would work nicely as a base if you want to keep things low-key. From there you can tick off Westlands in the morning, grab lunch in town, then explore somewhere with more of a buzz in the afternoon. Free admission almost certainly, though confirm before you go - Essex reserves usually don't charge.

Best visited spring or early summer when the wildflowers are actually flowering. Autumn's decent too, quieter, and the light's better for photography.
