Westlands Country Park

The grounds at Westlands spread across proper countryside just outside Wigton, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. You're looking at open parkland with mature trees, walking paths that meander through the estate, and enough space to actually breathe - rare enough in the Scottish Lowlands these days.

It works best for families after a couple of hours of leg-stretching, or for anyone who wants something gentler than a full hiking day. The landscape is gently rolling rather than dramatic, so it won't exhaust small children, though older kids might find it a bit tame. History buffs will appreciate the character of the place, though don't expect extensive interpretation or facilities - this is very much a country park in the traditional sense.

The real advantage is how close it sits to the caravan parks round about. Cressfield, just five miles away, is solid for a base (rates well at 4.8), and Glendale isn't far either. If you're staying at either and the weather's decent, you could easily spend a couple of hours here without driving anywhere far. It slots nicely into a wider Dumfries and Galloway itinerary - the kind of place you stop at mid-morning before heading somewhere else rather than planning the day around it. Free access, as far as I can tell, and no real time pressure once you're there.
