Westgate Gardens - SW side

The Westgate Gardens sit right on Canterbury's south side, tucked against the medieval city walls where the River Great Stour loops beneath the historic Westgate Towers. It's a proper working nature reserve, not some manicured public park - the kind of place where you spot kingfishers if you're quiet and patient enough.

You're essentially walking through restored wetland and riverside habitat. There are decent pathways, some benches where you can actually sit and watch the water, and enough open ground to let kids burn off steam without worrying they'll disappear into thick scrub. Bird watchers get the most out of it - bring binoculars and a decent field guide. The reserve is genuinely productive, especially spring and autumn when migrants come through. Families with young children will find an hour here pleasant enough, though it's not a day's destination on its own.

Access from Canterbury town centre is straightforward - the gardens are essentially an extension of the city's walking routes. If you're staying at Canterbury Lodges or Nethergong Camping (both excellent bases, mind you), you're well placed to combine this with exploring the cathedral and the old walled town itself. Seaview over towards the coast is further out but workable if you're based there.

It's free to visit and open year-round. The real magic happens early morning when the light's good and the birds are active. Midday in summer? It can feel a bit quiet and exposed. Go for the wildlife, not the views.
