Westford Community Woodland

Five miles west of Taunton sits a proper slice of Somerset woodland that most visitors completely miss. Westford Community Woodland is modest compared to the county's grander estates, but that's rather the point - you'll have the place to yourself on a Tuesday morning, which is exactly what a nature reserve should offer.

The woodland itself is mixed broadleaf with decent understory, the sort of place where you'll actually spot birds rather than just hear them. There's a network of paths through the trees, nothing demanding, all flat walking that takes between thirty minutes and an hour depending on how often you stop to poke around. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right; autumn's decent too when the light filters gold through the canopy.

It's fundamentally a walker's spot, or somewhere to take kids if they can manage a gentle ramble without demanding ice cream every hundred yards. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile, particularly in the quieter months. Don't expect facilities - there's no café, no visitor centre, no car park beyond a small pull-in. Bring water.

Westford works well as a half-day addition to a stay at Waterrow Touring Park down the road. The park itself is cracking for families, and this woodland sits nicely as a mid-morning detour on the way to bigger attractions around Taunton. It won't occupy a full day, but it's worth the twenty-minute drive from the park if you want actual quiet rather than curated nature.
