Westfield Brake

The woodland around Westfield Brake, just outside Dursley, is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it's worth the detour. It's proper forest walking territory: dense trees, dappled light filtering through the canopy, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the car behind.

You're looking at a straightforward woodland experience here. Paths wind through mixed woodland with plenty of shade, making it brilliant on those sticky summer days when the sun's too much. The area feels genuinely remote despite being close to town - no obvious crowds, no visitor centre faffing about. It's free to access and you can potter about for as long as you fancy, though a couple of hours does the trick for most people.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this one. Families with young kids might find the woodland a bit monotonous after a while - there's no dramatic views or playgrounds to break things up. But if you're after some proper woodland air and don't mind just walking, it's spot on. Bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast; forest floors here stay damp.

If you're camping at Pepper Pot or Tudor Caravan Park nearby, Westfield Brake makes an excellent morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not a destination that'll eat up your whole day, which is fine - use it as a breather between the more demanding attractions. Whitemead Forest Park, further out, offers more in terms of facilities if you need a proper visitor setup.
