Western Oxbow

The Western Oxbow is a proper crescent of water just outside Wakefield, formed where the River Aire looped back on itself long ago. You get a decent walk round it - flat, easy going, nothing too taxing. The lake itself is pleasant enough, with reeds fringing the banks and the occasional burst of waterfowl if you time it right. Early morning or late afternoon is when you'll see the most activity.

It's really a spot for walkers and bird watchers rather than families looking for entertainment. You won't find cafes or facilities here - bring what you need. The walk takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, though you can do it quicker if you're not stopping to look at things. Worth combining with other Wakefield-area attractions rather than making a special trip.

If you're staying at Nostell Priory Holiday Park, it's only six miles away, so worth an afternoon visit. The historic house at Nostell is the main draw for that area, but the oxbow works well as a quiet stretch afterward to clear your head. Best visited in spring and summer when the water's higher and the vegetation fuller. Winter can be a bit bleak and muddy round the edges.

Free to visit, no fees, no hassle. Just turn up and walk. The nearest sensible parking is in Wakefield town itself, then it's a short drive or longer walk out.
