Westcroft Green Space

The path into Westcroft Green Space opens up gradually - you won't get the full sense of it from the road. What you're stepping into is proper working countryside, the sort of place that feels genuinely quieter than Newark itself, though it's barely five minutes away. The reserve does what it says on the tin: grassland, wetland, the occasional flash of bird life if you're patient enough to stand still.

It's the kind of spot that rewards walkers more than casual visitors. An hour here and you'll have covered the main trails and seen what there is to see. Bring binoculars if you're serious about the birdwatching - water birds are the main draw - but don't expect anything dramatic or rare. Families with young kids might find it a bit open and exposed; there's limited shade and the paths aren't exactly adventure-playground territory.

One advantage is the free admission. That makes it a legitimate addition to a park holiday at either Trentfield Farm or Four Seasons Country Park, both nearby and both highly rated. Neither is more than a few minutes' drive away, so you can build this into a morning walk before settling into the caravan.

The reserve works best in spring and early summer when the birds are more active and the wetland areas feel properly alive. Winter can feel bleak and exposed. Worth the detour if you're staying locally and fancy a proper leg-stretch without overthinking it. Don't plan your whole holiday around it, but it's a solid addition to the itinerary.
