West Wood

A proper woodland walk east of Stevenage, West Wood is the kind of place you'll stumble upon while exploring Hertfordshire's quieter corners rather than plan a special trip for. The forest offers decent walking trails through mixed woodland - beech and oak mostly - with enough shade that it's bearable even on a warm day. The paths are well-maintained enough but can get muddy after rain, so come prepared.

Family groups will find it manageable. Kids can run about without too much fear of getting lost, though it's not an adventure playground, so don't expect them to stay entertained for more than an hour or so. Serious walkers will appreciate it as part of a broader ramble around the Stevenage area rather than a standalone destination.

There's no visitor centre or facilities I could find, so bring water and pack a proper lunch if you want to make an afternoon of it. The woodland itself is free to access - just rock up and start walking.

If you're based at Ashridge Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, it's worth adding to your itinerary as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It pairs nicely with other green spaces in the region without eating up a whole day. Realistic expectation: pleasant enough for a couple of hours, particularly in autumn when the light filters through the canopy properly.
