West Wood

Walk into West Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest - the kind where light filters through in shafts and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a serious woodland, not a manicured park, with trails that wind through beech and oak with real purpose rather than dawdling loops. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, and in spring the whole place explodes with bluebells if you time it right.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after a stroll from Alresford, it's brilliant - close enough to reach on foot but far enough in that you feel properly removed. The paths are well-maintained and varied, ranging from gentle ambles to proper climbs depending which way you head. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will do well here; younger ones might find the lack of playground infrastructure a bit underwhelming after a while.

Timing-wise, allow at least ninety minutes to two hours if you want to actually experience the place rather than just tick it off. Early morning or late afternoon are genuinely better - fewer people and the light's proper lovely. If you're staying at Woodlands Camping or The Spinney just down the road, it's an easy morning mission before heading elsewhere.

The forest is free to access, though parking details are thin on the ground so arrive early in peak season. It's the real thing - no cafes, no gift shops, just trees and trails. That's either exactly what you want or it isn't.
