You won't find much fanfare about Kilmeston Down, which is rather the point. This chalk downland sits quietly between Alresford and the South Downs, offering proper walking country without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots. The views across the Hampshire countryside stretch for miles on a clear day - rolling fields, tree lines, and the kind of horizon that makes you remember why you came out here instead of staying indoors.

It's a straightforward walk rather than a technical climb. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find it a bit relentless underfoot. The chalk can be slippery after rain, so decent boots matter. Allow an hour or so for a decent circuit, depending on how far you want to push. There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no facilities - so bring water and pack something to eat if you fancy a stop.

For campers staying at Holden Farm Camping (less than two miles away), this is a proper no-brainer afternoon sortie. It works well as a morning walk before heading to Winchester or the wider South Downs, and it's close enough to combine with other local walks without eating a full day. The real appeal is solitude.
