West Park (Boating Lake)

The boating lake at West Park is the sort of place you stumble upon and think, why don't more people know about this? Shildon's got a proper lakeside walk here that actually delivers - water that reflects the sky properly, decent paths around the perimeter, and enough space that you don't feel hemmed in by other visitors.

What you're doing is straightforward: walking the circuit, maybe stopping on one of the benches to watch ducks and the occasional angler, taking photos if the light's right. It's not complicated stuff, but that's rather the point. Kids will happily burn twenty minutes chasing around, and adults get a genuine breather from the town beyond.

Timing-wise, allow 45 minutes for a proper loop, or shorter if you're just grabbing some air. It's free, which doesn't hurt. The real advantage comes if you're staying at Eden Grange Glamping just up the road - less than two kilometres away, making this an easy evening stroll after settling in. The Gables Pod Camping is further out, but still within reasonable reach for a morning walk before heading elsewhere.

Weather matters here. Grey drizzle and you'll want to move on quickly. But catch it on a decent afternoon and West Park genuinely works. It won't hold you for hours, and it's not the sort of thing that demands planning around. But as a breather during a County Durham long weekend, especially if you're based at one of the nearby camping spots, it slots in perfectly.
