The Avenue stretches for over a mile across the Wiltshire downland, lined with standing stones that march toward the horizon like an ancient procession frozen in time. Walking it in late afternoon light is properly atmospheric - the stones cast long shadows and you genuinely feel like you're treading a path that matters, even if you can't quite say why.

It connects West Kennet Long Barrow to the Sanctuary at Overton Hill, and while the stones themselves are modest compared to Stonehenge (which sits about 6 miles north), there's something more intimate about this ritual landscape. You're not queuing behind crowds. The walk takes 45 minutes at a leisurely pace, and you're essentially alone with Bronze Age engineering and a lot of sky.

History buffs will spend longer here, reading the geography like a map. Families with young legs will manage fine - it's flat and well-trodden - though under-tens might not grasp why they're walking between rocks. Walkers absolutely should do this, especially if staying at Ridgeway Campsite just 2 miles away, which makes it an easy morning ramble before breakfast.
