West Hanger

The woods around Guildford have a proper claim on your time if you've got walking boots and an afternoon spare. West Hanger is a stretch of mixed woodland with the kind of steep chalk slopes that make the Surrey Hills feel genuinely hilly - which they can be elsewhere, but here it's honest work underfoot.

What you get is straightforward: tree-lined paths that climb, dip, and meander through beech and oak. The chalk underneath means good drainage even after rain, and in late spring the floor erupts with bluebells. Views open up occasionally if you pick the right spots, though you're not here for panoramic vistas - you're here for the walking itself.

Walkers will find this properly satisfying. It's not a ten-minute stroll and it's not a day-long hike either - a couple of hours covers the main areas without rushing. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage fine; younger ones might struggle with the inclines. History types won't find much to grab onto here; it's just good, working woodland.

The forest sits within reach of several campsites and glamping spots. Chantry Wood and Hammonds Glamping are both close enough that you could base yourself there and explore West Hanger as part of a wider Surrey Hills ramble. Edgeley Holiday Park is also nearby if you want something more conventional.

Free to access, no visitors' centre or facilities that we're aware of. Go early on weekends to avoid the Guildford overspill. Wear proper shoes - the chalk gets slippery when damp.
