West Green Park

You'll find West Green Park just outside Crawley, a proper breath of fresh air if you're stuck in the commuter belt. It's a working nature reserve with woodland trails, open grassland, and enough wildlife to keep binoculars busy for a good couple of hours. The park's small enough that you won't feel lost, but large enough to actually escape the sound of the A23.

The walking here is gentle rather than challenging - ideal if you've got younger kids or parents in tow. Paths wind through mixed woodland where you might spot woodpeckers, nuthatches, and on a decent day, maybe a deer or two slipping between the trees. Spring brings bluebells that cover the forest floor like someone's spilled paint, and in winter the bare branches give proper views across the grassland.

It's free to visit, which is always welcome. Realistically allow two to three hours to properly explore without rushing. There's a small visitor area but facilities are minimal, so bring a flask if you're planning a proper wander.

Geographically it works well alongside other reserves in the area - you could slot it into a longer day exploring Sussex's green spaces. Both the Gatwick Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite (1.5 miles away) and Worth Forest Glamping (3.7 miles) would serve as decent bases, though the glamping option gets better reviews if you want somewhere with a bit more character.

Honestly? It's not dramatic or spectacular, but it does what it says on the tin. Perfect for a morning out if you're based near Crawley and want to stretch your legs away from the airport noise.
