West Bexington Nature Reserve

The shingle beach at West Bexington stretches out in that particular way Dorset coastline does - long, wide, and backed by a proper nature reserve that's genuinely worth exploring. You get the beach itself, which is excellent for a walk and offers decent views towards the chalk cliffs further along the coast. Behind the beach sits a freshwater lagoon fringed with reeds and wild flowers, and that's where the real wildlife watching happens.

Birders will have a field day here. Waders, wildfowl, and migrating species use the lagoon seasonally, so timing matters. Spring and autumn are best if you're after seeing something special. Even if you're not a twitcher, it's a peaceful spot - you'll spot herons, harriers if you're lucky, and plenty of smaller birds flitting about. The walking is straightforward, nothing too taxing, which makes it family-friendly if your kids aren't expecting theme parks and ice cream vans.

Admission appears to be free, and you can spend as long as you like pottering about. An hour or two is standard unless you're seriously into your ornithology. It sits well within a Dorset holiday itinerary - Dorchester is the nearest proper town, only a short drive away, and there are several parks nearby including Freshwater Beach and Parkdean Resorts West Bay if you're staying in the area. The reserve works best combined with beach walks and other coastal spots rather than as a standalone destination. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning with binoculars rather than a rushed afternoon visit.
