Wern-fawr Wood

You'll find yourself surrounded by proper old-growth woodland the moment you step into Wern-fawr Wood, just outside Llandrindod Wells. It's the kind of place where the trees have been there long enough to form a canopy thick enough to muffle the world outside - no manicured paths or visitor centres, just genuine forest with decent walking trails that wind through it.

This is walker territory, frankly. The woodland offers a decent half-day outing with enough variation in the paths to keep things interesting, though if you're after dramatic views or rare plants, you might find it a bit unremarkable. Kids will manage it fine for an hour or so before the novelty of trees wears off, but there's nothing specifically designed to keep them entertained. History buffs won't find much here either - it's just a working wood, essentially.

The forest sits brilliantly with the caravan parks dotted round Llandrindod Wells. Disserth Caravan & Camping Park is barely over a mile away, making it an easy morning walk from your pitch. If you're glamping at Celtic Woodland Holidays, you could combine woodland wandering with a proper comfort pitch. The Pines is a touch further out but works as a base for exploring this corner of Mid Wales.

Free access, naturally - it's a public woodland. No facilities to speak of, so bring your own water. Best visited when the ground's dry, as it gets boggy after rain. Allow two to three hours if you want to actually explore it rather than power through.
