Wem Moss National Nature Reserve

Walk onto Wem Moss and you're stepping into something properly rare - a raised bog that's been left to its own devices for thousands of years. It's the sort of place where the ground feels slightly spongy underfoot, where bog cotton waves about like someone's forgotten washing line, and where you might spot a sundew plant casually digesting insects. The reserve sits just outside Ellesmere in Shropshire, and it's genuinely one of the few intact raised bogs left in England.

Don't expect manicured paths or information boards at every turn. This is a working nature reserve, not a theme park. You're here to walk the boardwalk trails if they're accessible, scan for dragonflies and rare birds, and appreciate the ecological oddity of the thing. Botanists and serious birdwatchers will find plenty to occupy them for a couple of hours. Families with young kids might manage an hour before everyone gets bored by what looks, on the surface, like moorland.

It's free to visit, though there's minimal infrastructure. The best time is late spring through summer when the bog plants are actually doing their thing rather than sleeping. Winter's muddy and grim in a way that doesn't repay the effort.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around - Fernwood, Colemere, or Abbey Green Farm are all within a couple of miles - this makes a solid morning's work before heading into Ellesmere town proper or exploring the lakes nearby. It's not spectacular, but it's honest and uncommon. That counts for something.
