Kids under ten might get restless unless they're the type who genuinely want to spot birds - there's no playground nonsense here, which is either a relief or a letdown depending on your family. Allow an hour, possibly two if you're serious about identification. There's a walking route around the pools, nothing strenuous, though the ground can be muddy after rain.

Being just outside Hereford, it pairs well with a caravan holiday at Kingfisher Meadow (a fitting name, given what lives here) or The Shires Park, both within easy reach. Free access, no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Go early morning for the best wildlife viewing - the pools are properly quiet before the dog walkers arrive.
