Well Wood

Well Wood is a proper Sussex forest just outside Heathfield, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The woodland is dense and atmospheric - old broadleaf trees creating that green-tunnel effect that makes you feel miles from anywhere, even though you're not. Paths wind through reasonably well, though muddy patches are guaranteed after rain.

It's ideal for walkers wanting a quiet hour or two without the crowds you'd get at busier spots. Families with older kids who won't complain about the lack of facilities will do fine here. Expect no visitor centre, no café, no amenities whatsoever - this is woodland in its purest form, which is either exactly what you want or a complete non-starter depending on your mood.

You can walk as long as you like without paying anything, though the lack of signage means it helps to know roughly where you're going. An hour gives you a decent circuit; two hours if you're properly exploring. Spring and early autumn are best - the forest has more character when light reaches the woodland floor, rather than the dense summer gloom.

If you're camping nearby at Fontmills Farm or Dernwood Farm, Well Wood makes a solid morning outing to break up the day without requiring a big expedition. It's not a destination in itself, but as a bonus ramble when you're already in the Heathfield area, it delivers exactly what it promises - trees, paths, and peace.
