Well Hill

The climb up Well Hill from Sanquhar takes about forty minutes at a steady pace, and the payoff is a proper 360-degree view across the Lowlands that makes the huffing worthwhile. You're looking down at moorland rolling away in every direction, the Southern Uplands rising and falling like waves, and on a clear day you can pick out landmarks for miles. The peak itself is windswept and exposed - bring a waterproof because the weather turns fast up here.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. It's not technical, but it does require actual fitness and decent boots. Families with young legs will manage it fine; toddlers, less so. You'll get a genuine sense of solitude up there, even on weekends. The town of Sanquhar lies below, a proper Lowland settlement with its own grit, and it's worth having a wander round afterwards.

As a standalone walk, allow two and a half hours return from town. Come in autumn when the light's golden and the visibility decent, or spring when you're less likely to get clobbered by rain. Summer can get muggy and midgy. The hill itself is free - it's a public walk - and you can park in Sanquhar town centre without fuss.
