Welbourn Castle

The ruins sit quietly in the Lincolnshire countryside just outside Lincoln, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. Welbourn Castle is what's left of a Norman motte-and-bailey stronghold - earthworks and fragments rather than the dramatic stone keep you might expect, but that's precisely what makes it interesting.

What you get is a proper sense of how medieval fortifications actually worked. The mound rises from the surrounding fields, and from the top the view across Lincolnshire opens up nicely. It's free to access and takes about thirty minutes to explore properly if you're the type who reads the interpretive boards and takes photos. If you just want to climb the mound and move on, fifteen minutes does it.

History buffs will find it worthwhile - this is genuine Norman defensive architecture, though it lacks the drama of better-preserved castles. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming; there's not much to do beyond the walk itself. Walkers doing a circuit in the area will appreciate the detour far more.

Stay at Spire View Meadow's glamping site just three miles away and you've got easy access to Lincoln's cathedral and shops, plus this quieter historical spot for a morning walk. The contrast works well - spend time wandering the city, then head out to the castle ruins for something that feels genuinely removed from the tourist trail. Worth the visit if you're based locally, less essential if you're just passing through.
