Wedder Dod

The walk up Wedder Dod is short, sharp, and absolutely worth your time if you're staying anywhere near Sanquhar. It's not a mountain in any real sense - more a proper hill that rises 2,268 feet from the surrounding moorland - but what it lacks in stature it makes up for in views. On a clear day you can see right across the Scottish Lowlands, and there's something rather special about standing on open ground where the horizon seems to stretch forever.

You'll need to allow about two hours for the round trip from the nearest car park, though the actual climbing time is closer to forty minutes if you're reasonably fit. The path isn't technical, but it's exposed and can get boggy underfoot, so proper boots are non-negotiable. Winter visits are possible but demanding - the wind up there doesn't mess about.

This is primarily a walker's destination. History buffs might find the surrounding moorland interesting, but there's nothing archaeological to see at the summit itself. Families with younger kids will struggle; it's not a casual stroll. But if you're staying at Sunnyside Lodges or anywhere else in the area and you've got a clear evening, drive to the trailhead and go. The Lowlands from up there look genuinely wild, which isn't something you'd expect this far south. Budget a full afternoon to do it properly and bring waterproofs whatever the forecast says.
