Wecock Common

The forest floor at Wecock Common is thick with bracken and pine needles, the kind of place where you actually feel the quiet. It's a proper working woodland just outside Waterlooville - nothing fancy, no visitor centre or ice cream van, just trees, paths, and space to breathe.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland walking through mixed deciduous and coniferous forest. The paths wind through decent-sized trees, some sections open out into clearings, and in spring the bluebells can be quite something. It's the sort of place where you'll spot muntjac deer if you're lucky, or at least hear them crashing through the undergrowth. Dog walkers are thick on the ground, which tells you it works for a casual stroll.

Walkers will get a solid hour or two out of it depending on which routes you take. History types won't find much - it's about woodland, not heritage. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first loop, but older children who actually want to explore will be fine.

It's free and open access. Go early in the day if you want any peace - by mid-morning the car parks get busy. Autumn's probably best, when the light filters through properly and the place has some colour.

Fit it into a park holiday as a proper walk rather than a destination. If you're staying at The Old Dairy Farm Glamping or ScottsHaven Caravanning just down the road, it's worth the short drive for an hour's forest work. Won't blow your mind, but solid woodland on the Hampshire-West Sussex border.
