Portsdown Hill

Standing on Portsdown Hill, you get the sort of view that makes you understand why someone built a fort up here in the first place. The ridge rises sharply above Waterlooville, and on a clear day you're looking straight down at Portsmouth Harbour, the Solent, and across to the Isle of Wight. It's genuinely impressive - the kind of panorama that works for everyone from serious walkers to families who've driven up for twenty minutes of fresh air and a decent vantage point.

The hill itself is more about the walk and the views than any single attraction. There are proper footpaths crisscrossing the ridge, so you can spend anything from an hour pottering about to a full afternoon rambling. The forts dotted along the top - Victorian defences that once bristled with cannons - add a bit of history to the leg work, though don't expect visitor centres or elaborate signage. It's the raw view you're after here.

Walkers will get the most from it, honestly. The paths are well-trodden and accessible enough, though it's genuinely hilly if you're not used to it. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before everyone gets restless. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks on Hayling Island or round Waterlooville way, it's a proper alternative to another beach day - different perspective, no sand in the car, and you can see where you've just come from. Free to visit, obviously. Bring decent shoes and a coat; it can get windy up there.
