Weardale Forest

The forests around Weardale stretch across the upper reaches of County Durham with proper serious woodland - the kind that makes you feel properly remote even though Hexham's only a half-hour drive away. You're looking at dense mixed plantations and open moorland, criss-crossed with walking trails that range from gentle riverside strolls to proper leg-burners through the hills.

It's walkers' territory, full stop. The forest tracks are well-maintained and the terrain rewards you with views across to the Pennines on clear days. There's something about walking through these woods in autumn - the light filters through the larch and spruce in that particular way that makes you understand why people bother with the outdoors at all. Bring decent boots though; it can get boggy, especially after rain.

Families will manage the easier sections, but don't expect theme park energy - this is for kids who actually enjoy being outside rather than those wanting constant stimulation. A couple of hours is usually enough unless you're doing a proper half-day hike. There's no visitor centre to speak of, so bring a map or download the routes beforehand. Free to access.

If you're based at Westgate Caravan & Camping Site nearby, this becomes your daily walking destination rather than a special trip. It's less dramatic than the Lake District fells but less crowded too, and that's worth something. Worth fitting in if you're exploring the North East properly.
