We Are the Music Makers

The moment you walk into We Are the Music Makers, you're surrounded by actual instruments - lots of them. Not behind glass, mind you. These are things you can pick up, play with, break if you're not careful. It's a hands-on gallery that takes music seriously without being precious about it.

The collection spans everything from traditional orchestral pieces to oddities you've probably never heard of. There's real craft on display here - you see how instruments are made, what makes them tick. It's the kind of place where someone who plays violin will spend two hours captivated, and someone who can't read music will still find themselves messing about with a didgeridoo for twenty minutes.

Kids do genuinely enjoy it, especially the interactive bits. The novelty wears thin after about ninety minutes though, unless they're seriously into music. Families with younger children might find it too specific; it's not a playground, it's genuinely educational.

Sawbridgeworth's the nearest proper town if you need supplies or lunch afterwards. If you're staying at The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake - less than a mile away - it makes for a proper rainy afternoon activity. Toad Abode, a bit further out, gives you a quieter base. Both parks work well with this as part of a broader Hertfordshire trip rather than a standalone destination.

Open-ended visit works best. Bring someone who actually cares about how music works.
