Waun Mawn Hut Circle

There's nothing flashy about Waun Mawn. You won't find interpretive boards or a visitor centre - just the remains of an Iron Age roundhouse sitting on open moorland between Newport and the Preseli Mountains. What you're looking at is roughly 2,000 years of weather, and it's oddly moving.

The hut circle itself is a shallow depression with a low stone bank marking where the walls once stood. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of imagination - stand in the middle and you can almost picture the cooking fire, the thatch overhead, a family settling in for winter. Archaeologists have done proper work here, so you're not just staring at a bump in the ground.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - you're out on the Preseli moorland, so factor in a proper trek to make the visit worthwhile. Allow an hour or so for the site itself, but really you want to be spending a morning up here, exploring the ridge. The views across Pembrokeshire are genuine.

It's free, naturally. Just turn up. Best in dry weather when the moorland doesn't feel like a bog. Late spring through early autumn is ideal - you'll want proper visibility.

If you're based at Llwyngwair Manor or The Hide, both within six miles, this fits neatly into a broader moorland walk. It's the sort of stop that makes you feel like you've actually discovered something, even though thousands have walked this ground before.
