Watts Studios (Limnerslease)

Watts Studios sits just outside Guildford in a corner of Surrey that most people drive straight past. It's the former home and workshop of George Frederic Watts, a Victorian painter who spent the last decades of his life here creating huge, ambitious canvases on subjects most contemporary artists wouldn't touch. The studio itself is the real draw - a vast, high-ceilinged space filled with paintings in various states of completion, sketches pinned to walls, and the kind of creative clutter that tells you someone genuinely worked here rather than posed for photographs.

You'll find yourself standing in front of enormous symbolic paintings that feel oddly modern despite their 1890s execution. The house is more modest than you'd expect for an artist of his stature, which somehow makes it more interesting. There's no gift shop theatre, no corporate polish. It's just rooms where a proper artist lived and worked.

Historically minded visitors and anyone interested in Victorian art will find this genuinely worthwhile. The painting collection alone justifies the journey. Families with young kids might struggle with the pace - there's a lot to look at but not much to actively do, and wandering around a Victorian artist's studio isn't exactly peak entertainment for the under-tens.
