Waterswallows Quarry Lake

You'll find Waterswallows Quarry Lake just outside Buxton, a former limestone quarry that's been flooded to create something rather unexpected in the Derbyshire landscape. It's the sort of place that makes you pause - a body of water surrounded by steep stone faces where excavation left off decades ago. The lake itself is calm and reflective, ringed by woodland that's gradually reclaimed the quarry edges, which gives it an oddly peaceful atmosphere despite its industrial origins.

The paths around the perimeter offer decent views without being particularly strenuous, though the terrain can be uneven and muddy depending on rainfall.
