Waterside Ecology

You'll find Waterside Ecology tucked away near Gairloch, where the Highland landscape does most of the heavy lifting. It's a nature reserve that takes its name seriously - the waterside setting means you're walking alongside lochs and burns with serious mountain backdrops. This is proper birdwatching territory, and if you've got binoculars and patience, you'll clock golden eagles, red-throated divers, and whatever else decides to show up that day.

The reserve works best for keen naturalists and anyone wanting a proper walk without the tourist crowds. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on entertainment - there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, just the landscape and whatever wildlife cooperates. That said, older children who've caught the birdwatching bug will be in heaven.

It's free to access, which is worth knowing. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about it, or pop in for 45 minutes if you're combining it with other bits of Gairloch. Spring and early summer are best for birds and wildflowers, though winter brings a different kind of drama to the Scottish Highlands.
