Waterloo Copse

You'll find Waterloo Copse just outside Burford, a small woodland patch that punches above its weight if you're after a proper forest walk without the crowds. It's the sort of place locals know and tourists miss, which is exactly why it's worth stopping by.

The copse itself is dense woodland - ancient oakwood by the look of it - with decent paths threading through. Nothing too strenuous, but you'll want proper walking shoes because the ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain. The light filters through the canopy in that particular way old woods do, and there's genuine peace here. You won't hear traffic or see anyone else much, even on weekends.

Walkers get the most from it. Families with young kids might manage thirty minutes to an hour before boredom sets in - there's no playground or attractions beyond trees - but older children who actually enjoy being in the woods will find it absorbing. The woodland floor is full of stuff to notice if you're that way inclined.

Free to access, as far as anyone knows, and you can spend as little or as long as you want. The nearest proper base is Wysdom Touring Park just a few miles away near Burford, making this an easy addition to a wider Oxfordshire holiday. It's the sort of stop you slot in between bigger attractions - a breathing space in an itinerary. Don't expect facilities or crowds. Just trees, quiet, and the genuine article.
