Watergate Forest Park

The woodland around Stanley isn't what you'd call dramatic, but Watergate Forest Park has a quiet appeal that grows on you. It's proper woodland - mixed broadleaf and conifer, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of fighting crowds.

You're mainly here to walk. There are decent trails threading through the trees, ranging from a gentle potter to something with a bit more leg work. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is lovely after miles of pavement, and on a clear day the light filtering through creates that golden-hour effect photographers love - though don't expect dramatic vistas or sweeping views. This is intimate stuff.

Families with younger kids will get an hour or so out of it comfortably; older walkers could happily spend a morning here. History buffs won't find much to detain them - it's nature rather than heritage - but anyone after a proper forest fix will find it worthwhile. Dog walkers absolutely come alive here.

If you're staying at Beamish Holiday Park or the five-star Beamish Glamping setup, this is an easy add-on - close enough for a morning visit without eating into your day. The walk clears your head between other activities. Admission appears free, which is fair given what you get. The trails are reasonably well-maintained, though it pays to check conditions after heavy rain. Best visited outside school holidays when you've got some peace and quiet.
