Gibside

The River Derwent cuts through a proper swathe of woodland here, and Gibside feels like the kind of place locals have known about for years while everyone else drives past on the way to somewhere flashier. It's a nature reserve that actually delivers - miles of riverside paths, wildflower meadows that aren't manicured to death, and enough birdwatching potential to keep twitchers happy for an afternoon.

You'll walk through broadleaf woodland, cross a few bridges, and stumble onto patches where the undergrowth has been left to do its thing. There's no theme park atmosphere, no visitor centre blaring interpretive videos at you. Just trees, water, and the occasional glimpse of something worth photographing. Families with school-age kids will manage the main paths without complaint, though toddlers might find the longer loops tedious.

It's free, which is always welcome, and honestly worth a morning if you're based at one of the glamping spots nearby - Beamish Glamping or Valley View are both solid choices for a few nights out. The walk takes whatever time you've got: pop in for an hour, or commit to the full circuit if you're not in a rush. Spring and early summer hit best, when the woodland floor comes alive. Winter's drabbish but peaceful if solitude appeals.
