Water Wheel Pit

The Water Wheel Pit sits just outside Llanidloes in Powys, a rather unassuming spot that reveals itself gradually as you explore. What you're looking at is the physical evidence of 18th and 19th century industrial activity - a sunken pit where a water wheel once drove machinery for textile production. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of curiosity and local knowledge, rather than shouting about itself.

The pit itself is visible as a distinct depression in the landscape, with the remains of the wheel mechanism sometimes partially exposed depending on water levels and season. The Clywedog River runs nearby, which was the whole point of locating here - water meant power, and power meant profit. Walking around it takes twenty minutes or so, though you'll want to allow time for understanding what you're actually seeing. Wear decent boots if recent rain has passed through; it can get boggy round the edges.
