Water of Leith Walkway

The Water of Leith Walkway is a proper riverside trail that winds through Fife, following the river from its source down towards the coast near Burntisland. It's not one continuous dramatic walk - rather a series of accessible paths that let you dip in and out along the water's edge, spotting wildlife and getting a genuine feel for this corner of Scotland.

You'll see brown trout in the shallows if you're lucky, herons picking their way through the reeds, and the occasional kingfisher if you're patient. The path itself is mixed - some stretches are well-maintained and flat, others rougher and muddier after rain. It's ideal for families who don't want a full fell-walking commitment, though older kids and keen walkers will get more from it. Bring waterproof shoes.

Allow anything from an hour for a gentle stroll to three or four hours if you're doing a longer section. It's free to access, and there's no specific "opening hours" - the walkway is just... there. Spring's lovely when the water meadows are busy with birds, but autumn when the light turns amber through the trees is when this place really sings.

If you're staying at Sandhills or Pettycur Bay - both decent caravan parks within striking distance - the walkway makes a solid morning or afternoon out without needing to drive far.
