Water Newton Gorse

Water Newton Gorse is a modest woodland patch that sits between Stamford and the Nene Valley - the sort of place locals know but visitors often miss. It's genuinely free to access, which counts for something when you're camping nearby at Nene Outdoors or Ferry Meadows. The gorse itself is low scrubland mixed with young trees, decent enough for a brisk thirty-minute walk but nothing that'll blow your mind if you're expecting ancient forest. Spring is when it earns its name - the gorse flowers bright yellow and makes the whole place feel properly alive. You can loop around it easily, and there's enough room to let kids burn off energy without worrying they'll vanish into the trees. It works best as an add-on to a park holiday rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Rockingham Forest Park over at Landal or one of the other sites, combine this with a proper walk along the Nene Valley Way or a trip into Stamford itself - which, frankly, is the real draw of the area. The woodland is fine for a dog walk or a quick stretch of the legs, but be realistic: you'll want somewhere with more substance if you've got older kids or if you're an experienced walker.
